Italy's Canned Tuna Industry: Leading the Way in Production and Sustainability

Italy ranks second in the world for the production of canned fish (including tuna, mackerel, anchovies, and salmon), following Spain.
The country is also notable for its efficiency in recycling tuna cans made from fully recyclable materials, achieving a recycling rate of 71.5%. In 2023, the revenue of the canned fish sector reached approximately USD 2.18 billion, marking an 8% year-on-year (YoY) increase. Meanwhile, canned tuna production stood at 73,581 metric tons (mt) in 2023, with a total product volume available for the Italian market of 143,250 mt. In terms of value, the market reached USD 1.82 billion, up 8% compared to 2022 and 26.34% compared to 2019 due to the inflations. Exports reached 27,926 tons.
