Spain Is the Leading European Country for Mussel Farming and Consumption

Spain, particularly the Galicia region, is well-known for its mussel farming due to the high demand for mussels. Spanish consumers consume 3.54kg of mussels per person annually, which is more than double the average EU consumers of 1.20 kg per year. Following Spain, 1.89kg of mussels are consumed annually by French consumers, while 1.73kg are consumed annually by Italian consumers. With 430,748 MT produced in 2020, the EU is the world's second-largest producer of mussels behind China. From those, 47% of the total of the EU’s production belongs to Spain, followed by France at 14%, Italy at 12%, the Netherlands at 8%, and Denmark at 7%.
