The Tanzanian government has banned the importation of salt, a move aimed at boosting the domestic market for locally produced salt products in the country. The Minister for Investment and Industry made that announcement when she visited the salt production areas in the Mtwara Region, saying that Tanzania has enough salt, especially raw salt produced domestically. Tanzania allowed the importation of salt in 2008 following the emergence of El Nino, which affected domestic salt production. However, after the end of El Nino, domestic producers proceeded with the production, thus providing the country with enough stock.
