Turkish oregano farm grade is currently being traded around TRY 22 per kg (USD 2.3 per kg). Generally, farm-grade oregano prices have barely exceeded USD 2 per kg (except the speculative increase in 2008, from TRY 1 to TRY 10). The price rise is the consequence of severe droughts, which decreased oregano yields by nearly 50%, whereas the demand remains nearly the same. Turkey supplies more than 80% of the world’s oregano demand and the prices skyrocketed due to scarcity of supply. Currently, it is estimated that there is only 1 KMT available stocks for farmers, and because the new season is 8 months ahead, it is expected that exporters will not be able to meet the demand.
