Shea butter is a fat extracted from the nuts of the shea tree which is indigenous to West Africa. Shea butter has been used as a cosmetic ingredient for hundreds of years. It is solid at warm temperatures and has an off-white and ivory color.
Shea butter is also edible and is used in food preparation, especially in some African countries. Occasionally it is mixed with other oils as a substitute for cocoa butter although the taste is noticeably different.
