Company Description
Who Are We?
Founded in 1998 by 18 families of small-scale producers, AACRI now brings together 150 families dedicated to coffee cultivation in the Intag Valley region, in Imbabura, Ecuador.

AACRI stands for Asociación Agroartesanal de Caficultores Río Intag (Agro-Artisanal Association of Río Intag Coffee Growers) and is affiliated with CORACE and the National Coffee Council of Ecuador.

📍 Location and Environmental Focus
The coffee plantations are located in the subtropical area of Cotacachi canton, at altitudes ranging from 1,200 to 1,900 meters above sea level, which favors the production of high-quality Arabica coffee.

The coffee is grown under shade using organic methods that protect native forests, watersheds, and local biodiversity.

📈 Socioeconomic Impact and Sustainable Development
AACRI promotes sustainable farming practices, environmental education, gender equality, fair trade, and technical training. It has improved local incomes, created jobs, and boosted the rural economy.

☕ Production and Marketing
Río Intag Coffee is rich in flavor (with notes of chocolate, caramel, and fruit) and is exported to the U.S., Canada, Japan, and Europe (Spain and France).

🛡️ Role in Environmental Defense
AACRI emerged as an alternative to the extractive model, particularly as a form of resistance to open-pit mining in Intag. It is part of a coalition with DECOIN, leading the defense of the territory and offering sustainable livelihoods.

🔬 Agricultural Innovation
AACRI collaborates with the University of Oregon to develop biofertilizers (soil bacteria and fungi) that enhance crop resistance to diseases such as coffee blight.

02

2. Strong Community-Based Organization

With over 100 smallholder members, AACRI is a solid grassroots cooperative that empowers local farmers through technical training, collective marketing, and democratic governance. Their model strengthens the local economy, promotes gender equity, and ensures transparency in decision-making and income distribution.

3. Consistent Specialty Coffee Quality

AACRI produces high-altitude Arabica coffee that regularly scores between 84 and 86 SCA points.
