Given Ethiopia’s diverse topography and geographical location, it is a suitable ecology for pulses production and twelve varieties are cultivated in the country. Of the different varieties, faba beans (horse beans) account for nearly one-third of entire pulse production, followed by red kidney beans, field beans, and chickpeas (each around 14% of production). Ethiopia is among the world’s top 10 total pulses producers, the second-biggest faba beans producer after China and the sixth biggest chickpea producer. In total, 2,980 tonnes of pulses have been produced on 1,600 hectares in Ethiopia in 2017/18.
