Due to the continuously diminishing supply of sand eel in Indonesia, the Ministry of Fisheries and Maritime Affairs' central government is implementing a new rule regarding the production of sand eel. The rule states that eel can only be harvested once it reaches 5 Kg in weight for the European eel variety, and 2 Kg for the Japanese eel. This new rule will also affect the export-allowed eel.

Although this may create some business challenges for national sand eel producers, the new rule has been deemed necessary to control eel production. Most producers have the tendency to sell younger eel without considering the long term production within the country, hence causing the diminishing supply of sand eel. This new rule is expected to revitalize Indonesia's production volume of sand eel in the coming years.
