The oranges were brought to Portugal at the beginning of the 16th Century, from Goa, in India, by the Portuguese King D. João, and a large number of the orchards are located in the South of Portugal, in Algarve, due to sunny conditions and good temperatures.
The oranges from this region are IGP (Protected Geographical Indication) and have high juice content (30-35%) that distinguishes them from other citrus fruits. The varieties available in this region are Newhall, Lanelate, Valencia Latte, and D. João, and the harvest is all year round.
Algarorange is a Non-Profit Organization founded in 2018 to promote the orange of Algarve and has 7 members that represent around 30% of the Portuguese citrus production. Algarorange launched a new video in January 2022, at the beginning of the harvest campaign, which shows the orchards and all the specifications of this unique product. Still, according to a buyer from a big Portuguese Supermarket Chain, there are a lot of structural issues to be solved in the organization because all the seven members are big producers that export around 40% of their products directly and individually.
