Indonesia importers are looking forward to selling their grapes imported from Australia starting from 22 Feb to 22 April. A small number of containers are arriving in Jakarta since early 22 January, and the market is estimated to have 30-40 FCLs circulating by early March.
Although grapes from US and China have been depleted, fresh demands expected to be filled from Australia origin, especially on favorite Sweet Sapphire variety could drop due to negative sentiment from resurgence of high COVID-19 cases, prompting social restrictions to be in place in many major cities.
If the market cannot absorb efficiently, modern markets which will be a dominant segment for the Australian grape will start bid wars which would result in lower or even negative margins. To prevent this some importers have probe opportunities to import from the upcoming grape season from Chile and ongoing South Africa, despite logistical challenges and long transit time.
