European fish processors and importers are urging European Union (EU) authorities to postpone excluding Russian white fish from the tariff quota system, which maintains a zero import duty.
Recent reports from various foreign industry media indicated the EU's intention to exclude Russian and Belarusian fish from the tariff quotas (ATQ) system starting Jan-24. If implemented, these fish would be subject to a duty of 13.7%, replacing the current zero-duty status for a specified volume of imports.
The industry stakeholders highlight the significant reliance of the European market on Russian fish as a crucial raw material for processing within the European Union. This supply comes directly from Russia or after primary processing in third countries like China. The appeal for a delay aims to maintain the current tariff arrangement and ensure the continued competitiveness of Russian white fish in the European market.
