Bangladesh's shrimp exports have been declining for the previous seven fiscal years, according to the Bangladesh Frozen Foods Exporters Association (BFFEA), owing to a drop in global demand for the comparatively high-priced indigenous varieties. Local varieties, such as 'black tiger' and 'galda,' are more expensive than the primary competitor, 'Vannamei,' which restaurants prefer to offer on the tables because of its lower price.

According to the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) data, shrimp export revenues declined to USD 328.84 million in FY 2020-21 from USD 550.16 million in FY 2013-14. Shrimp farming in Bangladesh was falling, and processing firms suffered from a lack of export orders.
