The garlic campaign is starting with good results and it is expected to continue growing thanks to increased demand from the main markets it targets. Until October 15th, 874 tons have been exported, 86% more compared to the same period in 2019.
Although Peru exports garlic throughout the year, it is considered that its campaign runs between October and April, months in which more than a thousand tons are shipped per month.
The positive results observed these days were mainly driven by shipments to Mexico. This market increased its demand in the last month, which was reflected in the growth of its imports by +15%. Mexico is also a garlic producer and exporter, whose campaign goes from April to September, complementary to the Peruvian window.
In addition to Mexico, this year Peru has great growth opportunities in the United States. This 2020, the United States has increased its demand for garlic, which was reflected in its imports, which grew 11% in volume and 42% in value between January and August. This is a great opportunity considering that in 2019 Peru did not send garlic to this country.
