Up to recently, Brazilian rice producers where prioritizing the export markets to the detriment of the domestic market, pushing an unexpected price increase in the local market, coped also by a shortage of rice on the husk supply from neighbouring countries. As of now, it is becoming more advantageous to sell locally, since the raise of domestic prices have offset the gains of currency devaluation obtained on the exports. On the other hand, Paraguayan suppliers, who traditionally sell their products to Brazil, are facing less demand, thus reducing their prices for export of polished (white) rice. As a result of this uneven offer vs supply ratio, it has created a large price gap in the region. Export price on FOB basis in Brazil is currently set at around US$ 590 per ton, whilst in Paraguay it is set at US$ 430 per ton. And right in between, counterbalancing the region, is the Uruguayan price set at US$ 510 per ton.
