The General Directorate of Forestry in Turkey is conducting studies on the inventory and utilization of thyme, a naturally growing spice in forest areas, with a potential yield of 55,000 tons from 340,000 hectares. The production of thyme, which grows in the Aegean, Mediterranean, and Marmara regions, contributed 1 billion TL to the country's economy and brought in 69 million dollars in foreign currency from exports last year. Thyme essential oil has numerous health benefits and is used in aromatherapy for various respiratory issues. Turkey is home to many endemic species of thyme and other herbs, with 52% and 65% of the species in the Thymus and Origanum genera being endemic, respectively.
