2025 has been a year in which animal health has put millions of euros of export business at stake because the impact of various diseases (including avian flu, African swine fever, or bluetongue) has affected not only sales abroad but also the economy of households. At the level of foreign trade, declaring outbreaks entails border closures for a sector—livestock—that exports nearly 15 billion euros a year (about 4% of the total goods exported annually by Spain); only with the impact of African Swine Fever (ASF) it is estimated that at least 1 billion euros have been put at stake. The final consumer is not oblivious to all this and is noticing it, for example, in the price of eggs because the sacrifice of a large number of laying hens has inflated their price even more.
