San Luis valley in Sonora, Mexico, has been granted permits to cultivate 2,226 hectares of asparagus, a crucial crop among chives and broccoli. Asparagus is a perennial crop with a 20-month lifespan and is planted in spring, with harvesting starting in the third year. The majority of the production, which lasts from December to March, is aimed for export to the US and Japan, while the remainder is sold locally. Mexico is the world's third-largest asparagus producer, with a total production of 272,020 tons, of which over 169,000 tons are exported. The cultivation of asparagus faces few pest and disease issues.
