Morocco is home to the largest and possibly the oldest apiary in the world, located in the Inzerki village. Built in 1850, the apiary, which houses at least 3,700 hives, is believed to be inhabited by the best honey-producing bees in the region, the North African subspecies of the Saharan yellow bee. The unique location of the apiary, at an altitude of 1000 meters, and the diverse flora in the area contribute to the quality of the honey produced. The hives are located on terraces to prevent aggressive reactions between the bees. The restoration of the traditional structures, damaged by floods in 1990 and 1996, began in 2005. The local population relies on the honey production for their income and values the contribution of bees to the sustainability of the surrounding argan forests.
