The German Sugar Economic Association has revised its forecast for sugar production due to sickly sugar beets. The average sugar content is now projected to be 0.7 percentage points lower than initially expected, at 16.4%. The predicted sugar beet harvest has also been reduced from 32.97 Mt to 32.53 Mt, leading to an estimated sugar production of 4.64 Mt, down from 4.95 Mt. This downturn is attributed to the spread of bacterial diseases, including Low Richness Syndrome (SBR) and Stolbur, transmitted by leafhoppers. These diseases have impacted at least 75,000 hectares of sugar beet crops, marking a significant increase from the previous year's 40,000 hectares.
