The Lambayeque region is facing a severe water shortage that is likely to impact approximately 60,000 farmers who rely on the Tinajones reservoir for cultivation of rice and sugar cane. The lack of water has delayed the sowing of 24,000 hectares of rice in the Chancay-Lambayeque valley, putting the crop at risk of failure. Regional Agriculture manager, Miguel Pérez Valdivieso, has urged the national government to declare a state of emergency and prioritize necessary repairs and construction of dams and canals to address the water scarcity.
