Seven southern African countries, including Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Madagascar, and Comoros, in partnership with WorldFish, are working on a project to enhance the quality of native tilapia in the region. The initiative aims to reduce the use of foreign-sourced species, increase production volumes, and protect local aquatic biodiversity. The project will focus on improving tilapia genetics, sourcing seed from hatcheries that use indigenous wild stock, and developing protocols for disease screening and genetic analysis.
