A difficult start to the asparagus season in Poland

- This year, asparagus started a few weeks earlier than usual, some producers cut asparagus already at the end of March. Then a very high temperature, reaching 30 degrees C, caused an abundance of asparagus. Prices dropped suddenly from PLN 30-40 per kilogram to PLN 18-20 per kilogram, said Jakobsze. He emphasized that this situation severely hit asparagus producers, who lost their expected early spring income. It got even worse in the following days. Frosts reaching -6 degrees Celsius at the ground caused all the green shoots to freeze. The bleached asparagus heads became glazed and the asparagus had to be thrown away. Producers recorded very large losses. Prices slowly started going up, reaching the level of approximately PLN 22-23 per kilogram, he said.
