(Daejeon=Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Jun-ho = The Korea Forestry Promotion Institute announced on the 18th that it will conduct a joint precision surveillance until December 15 to prevent the spread of pine wood nematode disease, which has occurred in the Daedeok District of Daejeon.
The surveillance target is within a 5 km radius of the outbreak area.
As the outbreak has occurred in areas adjacent to living spaces, thorough initial response and meticulous investigation are necessary for high-risk areas such as ornamental trees, park trees, and apartment complexes.
The institute plans to use drones for aerial surveillance and conduct ground surveillance in cooperation with the Central Regional Forest Office, Daejeon's Daedeok, Yuseong, Seo, Jung, and Dong Districts, and Hanbat Arboretum.
This precision surveillance will be carried out in stages to confirm the presence of additional infected trees, establish a control strategy to prevent spread, and develop management plans for affected areas.
President Choi Moo-yeol said, "Early detection and rapid response are the key to minimizing damage from nematode disease" and "We will carefully analyze the risk factors in areas adjacent to living spaces and strengthen scientific surveillance to maintain healthy forests."
