The Farmers' Council of Latvia, Zemnieku Saeima, has reported mixed potato crop outcomes across the country due to varying weather conditions. Semigallia region has experienced heavy downpours leading to potato rot, while Latgalia is grappling with drought, resulting in lower yields and quality. This will inevitably drive up the cost of local potatoes. Currently, potatoes in Riga markets cost 0.65 euro cents per kilogram, up from 0.55 the previous year, with prices expected to rise further in winter due to additional labor and electricity costs for sorting and separating damaged potatoes. The organization also highlighted a lack of insurance coverage for potato fields against damages other than hail.
