The Hungarian National Chief Officer for Agricultural Health Control and Food Safety (Nébih) has warned the public, especially horse owners, about the risk of West Nile fever spreading among animals. The disease, spread by mosquitoes, can affect horses, donkeys, cattle, sheep, camels, and humans. In horses, it causes symptoms such as fever, nervous system problems, and paralysis. So far, the disease has been identified in three Hungarian counties. Nébih urges owners to vaccinate their animals, control animal numbers near livestock areas, use mosquito nets, and report any symptoms to their veterinarian. The disease is notifiable in the EU, meaning it must be reported. Additionally, the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) provides information on human infections.
