The Jeonnam Provincial Institute of Marine and Fisheries Science has released 200,000 young octopus seeds into the waters of four cities and counties. These octopuses, hatched and grown for about a month in an artificial spawning farm, are expected to grow to around 12cm in one year. The Jeonnam region, which produces 383 tons of octopus annually, accounts for about 17% of Korea's total production. The institute has been enhancing octopus resources and fishermen's income by releasing 2.89 million seeds over the past 12 years. Director Kim Chung-nam emphasized the importance of octopus as a regionally specialized income-generating variety and plans to expand the release of species and quantities based on fishermen's needs.
