The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) is intensifying efforts to boost the resilience of food systems in the livestock sector, particularly in pastoral areas. The initiative aims to provide income, food, and employment for millions of people in arid and semi-arid regions, and to contribute to foreign exchange earnings through the export of livestock and livestock products. IGAD has convened a meeting to identify and prioritize interventions, with a focus on addressing challenges such as transboundary animal diseases and aflatoxins. The organization is also transforming the Sheikh Technical Veterinary School and Reference Center into a specialized institution to provide training and technical advice to policymakers in the livestock and veterinary industry.
