African swine fever (ASF) has significantly impacted the EU's pig farming sector over the past decade, but recent reports show a decrease in outbreaks. In 2022, domestic pig outbreaks in the EU dropped by 79% compared to 2021, with Romania, Poland, and Bulgaria experiencing the most decreases. However, Lithuania saw a slight increase due to a cluster of outbreaks. The disease affected eight EU and four non-EU countries, with Romania and Serbia being the most impacted. Wild boar cases in the EU also saw a 40% decrease in 2022, marking the first decrease since the disease's introduction in 2014. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is extending its StopASF campaign into 2023 to continue raising awareness and managing the disease in partnership with local authorities across eighteen countries.
