Algeria is currently dependent on imports for its corn and oilseed needs, spending 3.24 billion euros annually. To decrease this reliance on imports, the government has initiated a strategic program aimed at the development of corn and oilseed crops. Set to begin in March 2025, this program aims to expand the cultivation area to 5,200,000 hectares by 2028. The Director of Development and Promotion of Agricultural Products at the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, Ms. Hanane Labiad, highlighted the country's potential to become self-sufficient in these crops, given its agricultural land, farmers, and water resources. The plan includes the cultivation of 2,200,000 acres of corn and 3,000,000 acres of oilseeds by 2028.
