The Dominican Republic has confirmed an outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) in two provinces, affecting an estimated 19,600 pigs out of a total national herd of 1.8 million. This is the first confirmation of the disease in the Americas since it was first detected in China in 2018. The Organization of Mexican Pig Farmers (Opormex) and the National Service of Health, Safety and Food Quality (Senasica) in Mexico are calling for increased biosecurity and surveillance, emphasizing that the disease does not pose a risk to human health or meat consumption. The Dominican Republic will increase inspections of animal products and waste from commercial ships, cruise ships, and airplanes to prevent the spread of the disease. Opormex has urged pig farmers to report any symptoms or damage to their herds immediately to control the spread of the disease.
