The Alto Purús National Park in Peru, spanning over 2.5 million hectares and home to 176 native communities, is protecting one of the world's largest natural protected areas. Twelve Cashinahua communities have discovered the benefits of the huasaí fruit, leading to a sustainable use diagnostic study by the National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the State (Sernanp) in 2018. This initiative has strengthened the value chain for huasaí fruit pulp processing, benefiting around 1,000 people. The Association of Agricultural Producers of Biodiversity of San Martin del Medio Purús (APAB) started a pilot huasaí processing plant in 2020, improving harvesting and scaling techniques, and aims to improve collection and storage capacities in Pucallpa for better market access.
