Bangladesh is planning to increase its maize production to 10 million tons by 2025 and become a maize exporting country. This comes after a record seven-fold increase in annual maize output from 0.75 million tons in 2009 to 5.4 million tons this year, due to higher profit margins for farmers, policy support, and the burgeoning feed industry. The country currently falls short of its domestic maize requirements of 6.5 million tons and relies on imports. However, maize production faces challenges such as the need for more land and the growing infestation of fall armyworm. The Agriculture Ministry is working with the Bangladesh Wheat and Maize Research Institute and the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center to identify key areas for research and investment in maize production.
