Turkey's chickpea production is projected to increase by 22.1% to 580 thousand tons in 2022, up from 475 thousand tons in the previous year, with most of the production concentrated in Central Anatolia. The country's average chickpea yield over the past five years has been 116 kilograms per decare, with the majority of the production being for domestic consumption, which was 509 thousand tons in the 2020/2021 marketing year. Turkey's largest chickpea exports were to Iran, Pakistan, and Syria, but in the first half of this year, Iraq was the top recipient. Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Vahit Kirişci stressed the importance of self-sufficiency in agriculture and highlighted that Turkey is the gene center of legumes, particularly chickpeas.
