In 2023, 211 farms in Andalusia, Spain, imported approximately 5,000 tons of snails from Morocco, valued at four million euros. The first two months of 2024 saw a 88% increase in imports, reaching 248,000 euros. This comes as Spanish snail production has seen a decline, with the National Association for Snail Breeding and Fattening reporting a drop to 605 kilograms in 2023. On the other hand, Morocco's national production reached 15,000 tons in 2022, 80% of which was exported, primarily to European markets like France, Spain, Portugal, and Italy, due to high demand for Moroccan snail products.
