Relatively rarely does a pest show as much activity as it is currently experiencing in the southeastern corner of Hungary. After the unprecedented drought, this was all that was missing in Békés. Among rodents, the field vole is considered the main pest by Hungarian farmers. Not by chance, as it causes damage both in autumn and spring, remains active in winter, and the options for protection (especially chemical ones) are quite limited against it. It traverses areas almost unnoticed in its underground tunnels, with its presence only indicated by surface entrances and, of course, the patchy destruction in crop cultivation. Farmers in Békés County are particularly hard-pressed now, as they must deal not only with the field voles and the exceptional drought, but also with an increasing number of another rodent pest appearing on their fields.
