In Cherkasy, Ukraine, an unexpected drop in temperatures to between -3 and 0 degrees has adversely affected the early asparagus season, which began around April 12, three weeks earlier than usual. Farmer Andriy Dulin, among others in Central Ukraine, reported significant frost damage to their asparagus crops, particularly the young shoots, rendering them unsuitable for consumption. Despite this setback, there is optimism that asparagus can recover and grow rapidly with the return of warmer weather. However, the frost damage is expected to lead to a 40% increase in the price of Ukrainian asparagus in 2024.
