A trial led by Güizzo Frutas Frescas S.A. in Argentina, in collaboration with producer Oscar Machuca, has resulted in the earliest cherry harvest on record, more than a month earlier than usual, using varieties with low chilling hour requirements. The trial, which included traditional and licensed cherry varieties, was conducted in a 2,000-plant experimental block in Monterrico, Jujuy. The Royal Lee variety was the first to be ready for harvest. The project aims to shift the harvest window in northern Mendoza from weeks 42/43 to 39/40, leveraging the area's unique climate and topography for ultra-early stone fruit production. The research also plans to explore new genetic developments of cherries with low cold requirements, such as those from the Bloom Fresh, SMS, and Zaiger genetic programs. The trial faces challenges like improving dormancy entry strategies and optimizing timing of varieties, but promises to adapt to the region's conditions and enhance fruit quality.
