Argentina's pork production has grown significantly, with a record 8.1 million pigs slaughtered in 2023, a 5.3% increase from 2022, and total production reaching 761,863 tons. Buenos Aires leads in slaughter numbers, followed by Santa Fe and Córdoba. Despite this growth, Argentina still imports 30-40 thousand tons annually to meet domestic demand, though the gap is narrowing as per capita consumption rose to 16.71 kg in 2023. The country is exploring export markets, with a notable peak in 2020 due to Chinese demand. However, the African swine fever epidemic impacted the pig herd, causing exports to fall to their lowest since 2015 in 2022, leading to a trade deficit of US$ 100 million. Although exports increased in 2023, they remain lower than 2020 levels, with a trade deficit of almost US$ 43 million.
