Africa's swine fever (ASF) outbreak, which started in Italy over two years ago, has led to the closure of certain borders to Italian pork products. The European Commission has expanded restriction zones in Italy, prompting Canada and other countries like China, Japan, Taiwan, and Mexico to ban pork imports from affected areas. Despite the human consumption safety of the meat, the disease has cost the Italian pork industry over 500 million dollars in damage. The Parma Ham Consortium is, however, optimistic, highlighting that their product's long maturation ensures market access in the United States and Australia. The Italian government is now developing a plan to capture wild boars and eradicate the disease.
