Austria: Vegetable harvests are slightly down

The total harvest volume of Austrian field and horticultural vegetables amounted to 674,300 tons, which was almost the same as the previous year, with hardly any changes in the area. Optimal growing conditions in early summer and good climatic conditions in late autumn largely compensated for losses due to the late start and hot, dry summer. However, the latter was quite a challenge for the growers, because more irrigation was needed. The harvest of fruit vegetables amounted to 167,400 tons, which was slightly below the previous year (-1% compared to 2021), despite the overall increase in area (+6%). The tomato cultivation area decreased by 3% and the yield of 57,000 tons was correspondingly 5% lower than in 2021. The harvest volume of cucumbers also decreased significantly, reaching 44,100 tons in the indicated period (-8% compared to 2021).
