Two new decrees introduced on September 29, 2021, in France have imposed stricter regulations on the production of eggs, poultry, and palmipeds to prevent the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza. These regulations mandate the sheltering of poultry and palmipeds across the country when the avian flu risk is high, and in specific zones under moderate risk conditions. The rules also allow for some flexibility for small farms. However, the Confédération paysanne expresses concerns over the potential negative impact on the quality and market for products reared outdoors, and worries that 30% of full breeders may cease their operations due to these regulations. An upcoming biosafety audit, effective from July 2021, is anticipated to further regulate the industry.
