A study conducted by CONABIO and the IUCN, presented at the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Marseilles, has found that over 70 wild relatives of crops such as corn, potato, beans, squash, chili, vanilla, avocado, tomatillo, and cotton are threatened with extinction. The study analyzed 224 plants closely related to these crops and found that 35% are threatened due to habitat conversion, abandonment of traditional agricultural methods, and the use of herbicides and pesticides. The most at-risk species are vanilla, cotton, and avocado. The study emphasizes the need for a robust global biodiversity conservation framework and highlights the importance of safeguarding Mesoamerican wild relatives of cultivated species for food security and livelihoods.
