Peruvian banana producers are facing a crisis due to limited container space, increased costs, and a market preference for cheaper fruit, leading to a restricted banana supply. In response, the Norandino Agrarian Cooperative is proposing a solution for producers to shift their focus to growing organic sugar, which is more resilient and has a consistent demand. This shift could allow banana farms to become sugar cultivation farms, with the potential to start the project with 3,000 hectares. The advantage of exporting sugar includes tariff exemptions, which is not the case for Paraguay, a competitor in the cane market. The proposal aims to provide a viable alternative for banana producers amidst the current market challenges and the issues related to pesticide residues in bananas.
