Baja California Sur is leading Mexico in oyster aquaculture, with an annual production of 1,900 tons, according to Jose Alfredo Bermudez Beltran, the state's Secretary of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Agricultural Development. This activity is vital for the economic development and well-being of over a thousand families in the region. The majority of these families are located in the municipality of Comondú, with smaller numbers in Mulegé and La Peace. The industry also provides a way to sustain and recover species like the generous clam, ladybug, and lion's hand. However, the development of aquaculture is hampered by the shortage of seeds, and efforts are underway to establish a laboratory to address this issue.
