The EU Commission has expanded regulations on mobile bottom-contact fishing in the German exclusive economic zone of the Baltic Sea to protect sensitive habitats and enhance biodiversity. This initiative, coordinated with neighboring Baltic Sea countries, prohibits trawling in significant portions of marine protected areas, covering around 27% of the zone and 66% of existing protected areas. It aligns with the Natura 2000 network and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, emphasizing sustainable fishing and marine protection. Additionally, Germany is obligated under the EU Birds Directive and the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive to maintain or restore the 'favourable conservation status' of certain species and habitats, requiring coordination among EU Member States for commercial fishing measures under the Common Fisheries Policy.
