The Bursa Metropolitan Municipality in Turkey has initiated the 'Fig Harvest' project to boost rural development and economic growth. This region accounts for nearly 10% of Turkey's fig production and is a significant exporter of the 'black fig', which has received a geographical indication certificate and contributes 15-20% to the city's agricultural export income. The city's agricultural exports are projected to exceed $400 million this year, with a goal of reaching $1 billion by 2023. The municipality is also supporting producers of high-value berries through Tarım AŞ. The mayor announced plans to bring 5.5 million seedlings and saplings into production by 2023, which is expected to generate economic benefits. Additionally, the municipality is working to export figs to China, which could lead to opportunities in other markets. The fig's peel, rich in antioxidants, is highlighted for its health benefits.
