Europe is experiencing a milk shortage, leading to an increase in the purchase of American cheese due to its low prices, as warned by Mary Keo Ledman, a global dairy strategist at Rabobank. This shortage is attributed to higher production costs, including the impact of drought and the situation in Ukraine on corn prices, and the rise in labor, energy, and equipment costs. European farmers are hesitant to expand due to upcoming environmental regulations. Consequently, Europe imported over three times the average monthly amount of cheese from the US in February.
