Brazil's Standing Committee on Lobster Management has established a global catch limit for Caribbean spiny lobster and smoothtail spiny lobster, setting the total allowable catch at 6,192 metric tons. The regulations, published by the Brazil Ministry of Fisheries and Environment, include suspensions of fishing operations when 95% of the limit is reached, a ban on selling lobster in the latter part of the season to combat illegal fishing, and a ban on catching ovigerous females. These regulations are part of a 13-year long fishery improvement project aimed at sustainable practices.
