Brazilian fish farming exports experienced a remarkable surge in the first half of 2024, generating US$23.7 million, nearly achieving the entire year's exports of 2023. This represents a 72% increase from the previous quarter, with tilapia being the primary exported species to the United States, accounting for 87% of total exports. Other countries like Peru also contributed to the demand, with tilapia products seeing a general price increase, except for by-products not fit for human consumption, while the price of fresh or chilled tilapia fillets specifically rose to US$7.93 kilos in the second quarter of 2024.
