In August, bread prices in the European Union rose by 18% year-on-year, the highest increase since December 2017, due to the ongoing global market disruption caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. This disruption has led to a significant surge in global wheat prices and limited fertilizer shipments. The most significant price increases were seen in Hungary (66%) and Lithuania (33%), while the lowest was in France (8%) and the Netherlands and Luxembourg (10%). The combined price of bread and cereals in the EU also experienced the highest increase since 1997. Inflation in the Eurozone also reached a record high of 9.1% in August, primarily driven by energy and food prices.
